Golf is a wonderful game to learn, play and understand!

Is golf hard
to learn?
In Short, It should’t be…Key tips: Don’t over spend time on a range with a pro trying to perfect a swing! Yes, learn a few basic universal principles but then let your own swing naturally evolve from this over time. While this is happening, head to the course and get playing!

How many clubs do I need to play golf ?
Officially you can carry 14… If your a beginner though, trust me when I say Its a far easier game to learn, play and enjoy with just a few clubs. Also, you just don’t need that many and the bag is a loy lighter to carry!!

Should I take lessons?
A subject for much greater discussion!! But If are your thinking about it, or your currently in the midst of learning, let me give you this one important piece of advice…. If after just a few lessons you still find yourself over worrying about your grip, your stance, your posture, keeping your head still, and any number of other things that don't make sense as you try to sythentically piece togeather the swing, I strongly suggest you stop immediately and re-think your approach..

What golf ball should I use?
Golf balls universal in size are very different in construction and so can make a difference to a golfers performance. I was very definately a golf ball snob years ago!! Very boring if your a beginner though so I suggest you don’t worry about it and you buy golf balls you can afford to lose!

How important is the swing?
The swing to golf is as important as the lungs are to breathing. Its the key to all shots in golf, whether the shot putt or the long drive! Whats more important is understanding its prime function which is to always be something that is unique, smooth, flowing and continuous..

Should I know the rules of Golf?
If your a beginner, I’d say No! Its important to understand some golfing etiquette yes. The course is a groovier place when civility and courtsey is displayed. But bothering with such rules like ‘touching the sand before you hit the ball in a bunker is a penalty’ just adds more stress to the learning. The rules will find you as when the time comes, but until then Just enjoy playing the game.

Should you always play the percentages?
I measure my success by fun, feelings and memories, so for me the simply answer is no! In the right situation it has its merit, but if your just out playing remember this. No one will ever remember you chipping back onto the fairway but it may be harder to forget that shot you played that found that gap in the trees, landed over the bunker and rolled up close to the pin. Particularly when you remind them back in the clubhouse!

How important is using the driver?
If you chose to use a driver, then its a great feeling to be able to hit it well and send a ball somewhere down the fairway, whether its long or short. Its also a fun club to use so give it a go! What I would say though, is you shouldn’t live and die by its importance and spend too much time trying to correct each and every poor shot you hit with it. Instead I suggest you concentrate your time on learning to enjoy getting the ball out of trouble and back on the green because even the best can still miss a far few fairways when they play!

What tee boxs should I play from?
If I owned a golf course, I would have a selection of different tee positions for all to play from regardless of golfing ability or gender. As an example there would be short, front, middle and back tees depending on what takes your fancy on any given day….For me, long gone are the days when I feel the need to always challenge myself from the very back tees.…Until such time I own a course though, you may have to either keep to the old school mentality of playing from ladies (red), mens (yellow) and championship tees (white) or face the wrath of a grumpy member or club secretary!
